Funded by the Swedish Art Grants Commette the textile research project explores work by artist and master weaver Allina Ndebele who in the 1960’s was part of the first black art school at Rorkes Drift Arts & Craft Centre in Kwazulu Natal.

We have done commissions for brands such as trenery, Rand merchant investment and we recently got the opportunity to work on the booker prize nominated book cover Glory by the award winning NoViolet Bulawayo, TRENERY in collaboration with Thapelo Ketile for Penguin random house.

ARTIST-IN- RESIDENCE

In July 2022 The Ninevites hosted its first artist-in-residence in collaboration with Gamleby Photo Grant. The aim of the residency was to provide the artists with space and resources to support their artistic practice, encourage collaboration and enable them to create in a new context.
The four recipients were Cape Town-based designer, textile artist and researcher Sibabalwe Ndlwana; multidisciplinary artist Lindiwe Matshikiza; filmic and sonic artist Meghan Judge and sound artist João Renato Orecchia.

Lesela is a print publication that was born from the ‘Tellling Tales’ project. : An all-female, collective effort to honour and explore connections between people and textiles across the African continent.

It explores contemporary African textiles through the lens of makers, craft and materiality.
